MEDICAL BACKGROUND
There are two main types of orthopedic problems in foals which causes deviation of the limb. There are flexural limb deformities which involves the degree of retraction or over extension of the group of flexor tendons, given a contracted or a dropped appearance to the limb and there are angular limb deformities which makes the leg look deviated towards the outside or the inside off the long axis in the frontal plane. Also a combination of both can occur. These deformities are categorized as congenital or acquired depending if they occur during in utero development or at any time after birth.

There is not a well defined cause for congenital limb deformities but it’s suspected of a malpositioning of the foal in the uterus during the last third of gestation, with possible nutritional predisposing factors. It is starting to be seen more often in foals born from embrio transfers.Acquired limb deformities could result from excessive bone growth, or pain related. more info...
